Cannibals lose LL-Semi-Final 6-2

In a replay of the game on September 17 which was stopped in the 4th inning because of heavy rain, the TG Worms Baseball team traveled on Sunday to Bous to play the Lokomotive. The "Lok" were undefeated in the regular season and this promised to be an exciting game.
The defense played very well all day, turning two double plays, making spectacular catches, and the four errors Worms committed were only extra-base errors.
The game started well for the Cannibals. Although the best pitcher in the league, Kyle Cupps, started on the mound for Bous, the Cannibals took the lead in the 2nd inning on runs by Andreas Maaß and Dennis Biedert with hits by Biedert and Greg Hilker and sacrifice fly off the bat of Jerry Labrie. Neither team was able to manage anything offensively in the 3rd inning.
Bous finally scored a run in the 4th inning on a lead-off double followed by a single, but the Worms' defense tightened up and pulled off a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the inning without further damage.
The momentum turned in the 5th inning. The first two Cannibals reached base on errors, but both were caught stealing. Bernd Beyer followed with a single and Sven Friederich hit a ground-rule double into the right-center gap; however, the next batter grounded to second, leaving runners on second and third. This pumped Bous up and they were able to rally with two outs, taking the lead 3-2. Both teams went down 1-2-3 in the 6th inning.
The Cannibals once again stranded two runners on second and third in the 7th inning and this would prove fatal. The Lok led-off the 7th with a single, a double and a homerun. Coach Don Schoenborn reacted and replaced pitcher Naum Adam in favor of Bernd Beyer, who was able to get out of the inning without allowing any further runs, but the damage was done and Bous led 6-2.
Beyer pitched well again in the 8th, but offensively the Cannibals were now shell-shocked and went also down harmlessly 1-2-3 in both the 8th and 9th innings, giving the win to Bous 6-2.
Worms will now play for 3rd Place in St. Ingbert on either Saturday or Sunday. Bous hosts Bad Kreuznach for the Landesliga Championship on Saturday.

Herren erreichen die Playoffs

Bei ihrem letzten Spiel der regulären Saision feierte die Baseball-Mannschaft der TG Worms am Sonntag einen 15:6 Sieg gegen die SG Neustadt/Kaiserslautern. Die Cannibals sitzen damit fest auf dem zweiten Tabellenplatz und haben sich somit für die Playoff-Runde der Landesliga qualifiziert.
Zunächst fing das Spiel für die Wormser sehr gut an. Im ersten Inning konnten die Cannibals durch Hits von Greg Hilker-Schmele, Bernd Beyer und Andreas Maaß zweimal punkten. Die Verteidigung um Pitcher Naum Adam stand felsenfest und erlaubte NW/KL keinen Punkt. Im zweiten Inning führten Hits von Thomas Holschuh, Sven Friederich, Don Schoenborn, Hilker-Schmele und Maaß zu fünf weiteren Runs für Worms. Nach dem 2. Inning stand es somit 7:0 für Worms.
Im dritten Inning began sich das Blatt etwas zu wenden. Bis zum 8. Inning konnten die Cannibals nur vier weitere Runs bekommen. Angefeuert durch einen weiten Homerun des Kaiserslauterner Andreas Förster konnten die NW/KLer in dieser Phase auf 6:11 verkürzen.
Im 9. und letzen Durchgang wachten dann die Schläger der Cannibals endlich wieder auf und die Wormser machten 4 Runs durch Hits von Friederich, Beyer und Maaß. Die Verteidigung liess überhaupt keine weiteren Hits der Gegner zu und das Spiel endetete nach 3-1/2 Stunden Spielzeit mit 15:6.
Die besten Cannibals an diesem Tag waren Hilker-Schmele, Maaß, Holschuh und Friederich im Angriff, sowie Pitcher Naum Adam in der Verteidigung, der seine alte Form wieder gefunden hatte. Für Worms spielten auch Schönborn, Beyer, Dennis Biedert, Hans Karpf, Ed Seaman, und Thomas Bayer.
Die Playoff Runde fängt erst nach dem Sommerferien in September an. Dann erwarten die Tabellenersten der Gruppe Süd, die Bous Lokomotive, die Cannibals.

Cannibals gewinnen glücklich mit 24:19 gegen Saarlouis

Es sah gar nicht gut aus für die Cannibals. Stark geschwächt, da einige Stammspieler arbeiten mussten, sind die TGW-Baseballer am Samstag nach Saarlouis gefahren, um gegen die tabellen-vorletzte "Hornets" zu spielen. Von den nur neun angereisten TGW-Spieler waren auch drei krankheitsbedingt angeschlagen!
Durch die prikäre Personalsituation war Coach Don Schönborn gezwungen teilweise seine Spieler auf ungewohnte defensive Positionen einzuteilen was sicherlich dazu beitrug, dass die Wormser im Laufe des Spiels 10 Errors (Defensive Fehler) machten.
Über die ersten 3 Innings haben die Hornets die Oberhand gehabt und führten nach dem 3. Inning mit 11:9. In dieser Phase sind die Wormser Runs durch Hits von Ed Seaman (2X), Bernd Beyer (3X), Schönborn (2X), Hans Karpf (1X) und Naum Adam (2X) zustande gekommen.
Im 4. Inning konnten die Cannibals durch Hits von Schönborn, Adam und Seaman 3 Mal punkten und gingen in dem 5. Inning 12:11 in Führung. Hits von Sven Friederich und Adam haben im 5. Inning 2 weitere Runs produziert, aber die Hornets konterten ihrerseits mit 3 Runs zum 14:14 Ausgleich.
Im 6. und 7. Inning konnten die Cannibals durch Hits von Beyer, Andreas Maaß und Seaman insgesamt 3 weitere Runs erziehlen und ihre Verteidigung liess hier keine gegneriche Punkte zu. Im 8. Inning konnten die Cannibals mit nur einem Hit (von Greg Hilker-Schmele) drei Runs erzielen. Die Saarländer jedoch trumpften auf und konnten mit Hilfe von drei Fehlern in der Wormser Verteidigung sogar 5 Runs mit nur einem einzigen Hit machen. Nach dem 8. Inning stand das Spiel 20:19 für Worms.
Hits von Seaman, Maaß, Schönborn und Friederich führten zu 4 weiteren Wormser Runs im 9. Inning. Danach stand die Verteidigung der Cannibals fest und das Spiel endete nach 4 Stunden Spielzeit 24:19 für Worms.
Das letzte Saisonspiel der Cannibals-Herren findet am Sonntag, 24.07.2005, in Neustadt statt.

Jugendbaseball - Worms : Büchenbeuren 18:9

Die Jugendmannschaft der TGW Baseballabteilung konnte ihr letztes Heimspiel der Saison am 24.06.05 deutlich mit 18:9 gewinnen.
Auf der Bürgerweide hieß der Gegner Büchenbeuren Braves. Im Hinspiel waren die jungen Cannibals noch knapp mit einem Punkt unterlegen.
Im ersten Inning gelang den Braves nur ein Punkt, die Wormser umrundeten gleich dreimal die Bases. 3:1 für Worms.
Im zweiten Inning schlichen sich einige Unkonzentriertheiten in der Verteidigung ein, was der Gegner geschickt zu sechs weiteren Punkten nutzte. In dieser Phase klebte den Cannibals das Pech am Schläger. Trotz einiger Treffer sprang nichts zählbares heraus. 7:3 für Büchenbeuren nach zwei Innings.
Im dritten Abschnitt konnten die Gäste diesen Vorsprung sogar noch um zwei weitere Zähler auf neun Punkte ausbauen. Durch einige gute Schläge, Cleverness und Fehler des Gegner gelang es rekordverdächtige 15 Punkte in einem Inning zu erzielen.
Mit je zwei Hits zählten Strobel, Klein und Gumbinger zu den offensivstärksten Akteuren. Für Worms spielten: Elschner, Strobel, Heiser, Gumbinger, Böhm, Klein, Wingerter, Friesenhahn, Bastuk, Vasiliadis und Stenner.

Devils too hot for the Cannibals

The TG Worms Cannibals were a bit too over-confident when they traveled to St. Ingbert to play the Devils this past Sunday. The temperature on the field was already over 100°F at game time. The Devils made it hotter than hell for the Cannibals, defeating the team from Worms by a score of 15-8. With the loss, the Cannibals fell to second place in their division.
Playing in his first game ever, Thomas Bayer led-off the game, reached first on a hit-by-pitch and eventually scored the first run of the game. Unfortunately, the veteran players following him in the lineup were unable to follow his lead. The Worms' half of the inning ended when Naum Adam was doubled-up at second on a long fly ball off the bat of Andreas Maaß. The defense was solid in the bottom of the inning and held the Devils scoreless.
From the 2nd inning through the 4th inning the Cannibals managed just two hits and; although five Cannibals were walked in this phase, due to base running blunders they managed just one run. St. Ingbert, on the other hand, exploded with eight runs on ten hits, five of which were doubles, and two Worms errors. At the end of the fourth inning the Devils led by a score of 8-2.
The bats finally came alive for the Cannibals in the 5th inning. Hits by Adam, Ed Seaman, and Sven Friederich produced four runs, reducing the lead to 8-6. The Devils did not let it affect them and answered with three runs on three hits and two costly errors by the Cannibals' defense. Seaman doubled in the 6th and scored on a single by Maaß; however, once again bad base running snuffed-out the rally which should have produced more than two runs. The Devils kept pace scoring two runs of their own and the game stood 13-8 at the end of the 6th.
Although the defense finally settled down and only allowed two more runs by the Devils for the rest of the game, the Cannibals' bats were obviously overheated by this time and the guests from Worms managed just two more hits and no runs over the final three innings.
Playing for the Cannibals were: Thomas Bayer, Don Schoenborn, Thomas Holschuh, Naum Adam, Ed Seaman, Andreas Maaß, Hans Karpf, Greg Hilker-Schmele, Dennis Biedert, Jerry Labrie, Bernd Beyer and Sven Friederich.

Jugendmannschaft verliert knapp gegen Neustadt

Die Jugendmannschaft der TGW Baseballabteilung musste in Neustadt eine knappe 13:12 Niederlage einstecken.
Gleich zu Beginn konnten die Gäste aus Worms dreimal punkten, während den Saints nur eine Umrundung der Bases gelang. Im zweiten Inning erliefen die Wormser noch zwei weitere Runs. Begünstigt durch einen Fehler in der Verteidigung konnte Neustadt noch fünf Punkte erzielen und ging somit in Führung.
Der dritte Durchgang ging mit 4:1 an Worms, der vierte 3:5 an Neustadt. Somit stand die Partie nach 4 Innings 12:12 unentschieden. Im letzten Inning konnten die Niebelungenstädter keinen Punkt mehr erzielen. Diese Chance ließen sich die Saints nicht entgehen und erreichten den nötigen Siegpunkt relativ unspektakulär.
Bester Spieler auf Wormser Seite war Christian Klein, der insbesondere in der Offensive zugefallen wusste.

Erster Sieg für Jugendteam! 14:13 gegen Saarlouis

In einem dramatischen und bis zur letzten Minute spannenden Spiel setzten sich der Wormser Baseballnachwuchs gegen die Hornets aus Saarlouis denkbar knapp mit 14:13 durch.
Nachdem ersten Inning Stand es noch 2:1 für die Saarländer. Im zweiten Durchgang machte Pitcher Tobias Burg kurzen Prozess mit den gegnerischen Schlagmännern und ließ keinen Punkt zu, die Cannibals konnten die Bases gleich zweimal erfolgreich umrunden, somit stand es 3:2 für Worms. Begünstigt durch einen Fehler in der sonst sicher agierenden Wormser Verteidigung konnten die Hornets im dritten Inning vier Punkte erzielen, die TGW offensive antwortete mit einigen gute Schlägen und konnte drei Runs erzielen. 6:6 Ausgleich. Zu Beginn des vierten Innings musste Pitcher Tobias Burg aufgrund einer Zerrung vom Hügel genommen werden. An seine Stelle trat Christian Klein. Dieser machte seine Sache gut und brachte seine Mannschaft mit drei Gegenpunkten aus dem Inning.
Spielentscheidend war das fünfte Inning. Während Saarlouis kein Punkt gelang konnte Worms gleich sieben Zähler nachlegen. Mit einem Vorsprung von fünf Zählern ginges in den letzten Durchgang. Jetzt erreichte die Spannung ihren Höhepunkt. Pitcher Klein musste wegen Schulterproblemen ausgewechselt werden, auch die Wiederhereinnahme von Burg half nichts, die Hornets kamen Punkt um Punkt näher. Trainer Elschner, dem noch mehrere Alternativen offen standen, entschied sich für Jan Heiser, der für die nötigen zwei Aus sorgte und so den Sieg für Worms sicherte.
Die Jugendbaseballer zeigten sowohl in der Offensiv, jeder eingesetzte Spieler konnte zumindest einen Hit verbuchen, als auch in der Defensive ihre beste Leistung der bisherigen Saison. Spieler des Tages war Jan Heiser sowohl als Pitcher als auch mit drei Hits, darunter ein seltenes Triple, zu Überzeugen wusste.

Lokomotive runs over TGW-Cannibals 18-10

It was the game of the day in the Baseball-Landesliga - the two division leaders, the Bous Lokomotive and the Worms Cannibals met in Worms on Sunday (12.06) for the overall lead in the Landesliga. The Lokomotive had their "secret weapon" with them, an American who has the best ERA in the league. Adding to the suspense was the fact that Bous had never won in Worms. The game remained thrilling until the 9th inning.
Bous started the game with three nice hits, scoring twice. The Cannibals answered with one run on an error and a double by Andreas Maaß. The Worms Pitcher, Bernd Beyer, sent the Lokomotive down one-two-three in the 2nd inning and the offense tied the score at 2-2 on hits by Russ Risdon and Don Schoenborn.
Center fielder, Ed Seaman, held Bous scoreless in the 3rd inning by making a fantastic diving catch of a rapidly sinking line drive for the third out of the inning. Worms, on the other hand, brought 3 runs across the plate on a double by Dennis Biedert and a single by Thomas Holschuh along with two errors by Bous. Both teams went down scoreless in the 4th; although, the Lokomotive were forced to substitute their American pitcher.
The turning point of the game came in the 5th inning. Bous broke the game open, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring six runs on two singles, two doubles and three costly Worms' errors. The "Lok" also score a run apiece in the two following innings. The Cannibals were suddenly asleep at the plate, hardly hitting the ball and when they did it was right at a defensive player.
Worms finally scored again the 7th when Seaman led-off with a single, went to second on a walk to Biedert, stole third and scored on a passed ball. The Cannibals should have made more out of the inning; however, as they left three runners stranded on base.
The Lokomotive were able to score 3 runs on a double, a single and two walks in the 8th inning. The Cannibals answered with three runs of their own on singles by Naum Adam, Maaß and Biedert and a double by Seaman. The score stood 13-9 for Bous at the end of the 8th inning.
Bous exploded again in the top of the 9th. They scored 5 runs on five hits sending 10 batters to the plate for the second time in the game. Demoralized, Worms managed only a run on hits by Adam and Maaß to end the game.

Jugend: Deutliche Niederlage gegen Mainz.

Auf der heimischen Bürgerweide verloren die Jugendbasballer der TGW Cannibals deutlich mit 25:1. Gegen den starken Tabellenführer aus Mainz wollte man diesmal ein besseres Ergebnis erziehlen als im Hinspiel. Leider ließ sich dies nicht realisieren. Zur gewohnten Schlagschwäche stellten sich noch einige Fehler in der Verteidigung ein.
Gleich nach dem ersten inning (Spielabschnitt) stand es 11:0 für Mainz. Im zweiten Durchlauf erreichte Rene Böhm den Ehrenpunkt für Worms. Gegen die beiden eingesetzten Mainzer Pitcher fanden die jungen TGWler kein Mittel im Angriff zu Punkten, so blieb es bei diesem einen Zähler.

Cannibals 11 - SG Neustadt/Kaiserslautern 1

If the final score is 11-1, one does not normally think that the game was a pitcher's duel; however, that is exactly what the game between the Worms Cannibals and the SG Neustadt/Kaiserslautern on 5.06.2005 was. The Worms pitcher, Naum Adam, pitched an excellent game giving up just one unearned while scattering five hits, striking out eight and walking just one batter in seven innings. The two Neustadt/KL pitchers were only charged with four earned runs while giving up eight hits and six walks. In the end it was the Cannibals' experience which made the difference in the game as they took what little Neustadt/KL gave them and turned it into runs.
The game started well for Worms. Don Schoenborn singled and Bernd Beyer reached base on an error. Ed Seaman then smashed a 1-out, 2-run triple into right-centerfield but was stranded at third base. Worms then managed just three more runs through the next three innings on just one hit.
Neustadt/KL scored their only run of the game in the 4th. Their shortstop reached first base due to a dropped 3rd strike on what should have been the last out of the inning. He then took 2nd on a passed ball, advanced to 3rd on a single and scored on the ensuing play at 2nd base.
Worms broke the game open in the 5th inning scoring five runs on 4 hits and 2 errors. One of the hits was a 2-RBI single by Brett Hessler who recently re-joined the Cannibals; Brett played for Worms from 1993 through 1996. Finally, in the bottom of the 7th, Schoenborn singled home Greg Hilker-Schmele making the score 11-1 and ending the game on the 10-run-rule.
Playing for Worms were: N. Adam (1 Hit/ 2 Runs), B. Beyer (0/2), J. Borja (0/0), S. Friederich (0/1), B. Hessler (1/0), G. Hilker-Schmele (1/3), T. Holschuh (0/0), H. Karpf (0/0), A. Maaß (1/1), D. Schoenborn (3/1), und E. Seaman (1/1).
This coming Sunday, June 12th, there will be a "Doubleheader" on the Bürgerweide. The Youth team plays first at 10:30 against Hornets from Saarlouis. Afterwards, the men play their final home game of the season against Lokomotiv Bous. Game time is set for 2 pm; admission is free.

Cannibals Show No Mercy

Noch verärgert über ihre Niederlage vom letzten Spiel gegen Bad Kreuznach trafen die Wormser Baseballer am Sonntag auf die Brewers aus St. Wendel auf der heimischen Bürgerweide. Die Cannibals der TG Worms haben ihrem unerfahrenen Gegner keine Gnade gezeigt und gewannen nach nur 1-1/2 Stunden Spielzeit mit 20:0. Das Spiel wurde durch die hohe Führung schon im 3. Inning frühzeitig abgebrochen. (Normalerweise werden 9 Innings gespielt.)
Die saarländischen Gäste konnten gegen den starken Wormser Pitcher, Naum Adam, während des gesamten Spiels keine Lösung finden und schickten nur einen Mann mehr als das nötige Minumum ans Schlag. Die handvoll St. Wendeler, die den Ball getroffen haben, wurden mühelos von der Cannibals Verteidigung "Aus" gemacht.
Dagegen zeigten die Cannibals ein wahres Feuerwerk an guten Schlägen. Im ersten Inning konnten die Cannibals 12 Mann an den Schlag schicken und durch Runs (Punkte) von Schoenborn, Maaß, Seaman, Hilker-Schmele, Friederich, Adam, und Holschuh mit 7:0 in Führung gehen.
Im zweiten Durchgang gingen 13 Wormser an den Schlag und die Führung wurde auf 17:0 ausgebaut. Besonders erwähnenswert in dieser Phase war ein relativ seltenes "Triple" von Naum Adam (ein Triple ist wenn der Batter (Schläger) in einem Spielzug auf die 3. Base kommt) und der erste Run durch den Nachwuchsspieler Hans Karpf. Im dritten Inning blieben für die Wormser nur noch 3 Runs zu erziehlen, um das Spiel frühzeitig zu beenden - und genau das haben die Cannibals durch Holschuh, Beyer und Maaß getan.
Für Worms spielten Schoenborn (2 Runs, 2 Hits), Beyer (1, 2) , Maaß (3, 3), Seaman (3, 2), Hilker-Schmele (3, 3), Friederich (2, 1), Adam (2, 2), Holschuh (3, 0), und Karpf (1, 0).
Am kommenden Sonntag, den 5. Juni, gibt es einen "Doubleheader" auf der Bürgerweide. Zuerst spielt die Jugendmannschaft um 10:00 Uhr gegen die starken Athletics aus Mainz. Danach, um 14:00 Uhr, spielen die Herren gegen der SG Kaiserslautern/Neustadt. Eintritt ist frei.

Büchenbeuren Braves 13, Cannibals Jugend 12

Denkbar knapp mit 13:12 unterlagen die Nachwuchsspieler der TGW Baseballabteilung gegen Büchenbeuren am 22.05.2005. Dabei sah es lange Zeit nach einem deutlichen Sieg für Worms aus.
Die Offensive war so stark wie noch nie in dieser Saison, fast jedes Inning (Spielabschnitt) konnte gepunktet werden. Die Verteidigung stand sicher und erlaubte dem Gegner nur wenige Punkte.
Ein Inning vor Schluß führte man noch 12:6, eine Führung die normalerweise zum Sieg reichen sollte. Einige gute Schläge des Gegener, einige Fehler in der Verteidigung und schon hatte der Gegner das Spiel gegen die immer nervöser agierenden Wormser gewonnen.
Es spielten für Worms: Burg,J., Burg,T., Elschner, Klein, Heiser, Gumbinger, Wingerter, Friesenhahn, Bastuk, Böhm und Stenner.

Cannibals bitten by Cobras

The Cannibals' dream of going undefeated this season came to an abrupt end on Sunday. The TG Worms Landesliga Baseball team lost an exciting game in Bad Kreuznach by a score of 11-10.
The Cannibals only sent three batters to the plate in the first two innings and also proceeded to make two of their seven errors in this stretch of the game. Luckily for Worms, the Cobras had also not woken up yet either and were only able to manage one run off of Worms' sloppy defense. The scored twice in the third on hits by Beyer and Maaß; however, Adam lined into a double play to snuff out the rally.
After holding Kreuznach scoreless in the 3rd, the fourth inning started off well for Worms. The Cannibals sent ten men to the plate and took advantage of the Cobras' only two errors of the day to score 4 runs on RBI singles by Beyer and Adam. Bad Kreuznach answered with 5 runs on three hits and three more errors by Worms. The 4th inning ended tied at 6-6.
RBI singles by Friederich and Adam produced 2 more runs for the Cannibals in the 5th; however, poor base running cut the rally short. The Cobras kept it close at 8-7 on a solo home run by Rothbrust in the bottom of the inning. Both teams went scoreless in the 6th with the Cannibals turning a double play of their own on defense.
Poor base running by the Cannibals once again nipped a possible rally in it's bud in the 7th and Worms did not score. Kreuznach, on the other hand, was able to take full advantage of another Worms' error and sloppy pitching. They scored three times on just two hits to make it 10-8 for Kreuznach. Neither team was able to score in the 8th.
The Cannibals needed to score at least 2 runs in the 9th to stay in the game. An RBI double by Seaman and a suicide bunt by Holschuh tied the game; however, the last two Cannibals only managed to pop out to the infield. The teams went into the bottom of the 9th tied 10-10.
When the first Cobras batter grounded out to short and the second batter flied out harmlessly to center it looked like the game was going into extra innings. The next Cobra, their best power hitter on a field with a short left field fence, was intentionally walked by the Cannibals and the tension mounted. The next batter grounded sharply into the hole between short and third. Biedert made a fantastic play to dig it out; however, Holschuh could not handle the low throw at first, leaving runners at the corners. Finally, the Cobras' coach, Lechert, proceeded to stroke a perfect line drive over the infield and the game was over.

Cannibals Take Care Of Business 17-5

Three weeks ago in Neuwied the Worms Cannibals and the Rockland Raptors played an 11-inning, 6-hour marathon which the visitors from Worms managed to win by 32-26. Sunday's game in Worms started where that game left off.
Neither team scored in the first inning. In the second, the Cannibals pitcher, Naum Adam, as well as the rest of the Worms' defense let their guard down and allowed 4 runs on just 2 hits by the Raptors. The Cannibals were able to get two runs back in the bottom of the inning on hits by Adam, Hilker, Borja and Beyer; however, they were still not playing up to form as evidenced by running errors which snuffed the rally out early.
As of the third inning, the Cannibals finally woke up and played smart baseball. The rest of the way Rockland managed just one run on only four hits. Worms, on the other hand, scored at least three runs in every inning. From the third through the sixth the Cannibals pounded out 12 hits producing 15 runs. The score was 17-5 going into the bottom of the 7th inning and the game was called because of the 10-run-rule. With the victory, the team from Worms took over sole possession of first place in their division.

The Cannibals next game is an away game on May 1 against the much improved, 2nd place Cobras from Bad Kreuznach. The Youth team travels to Trier on May 8 to take on the Cardinals.

Sieg und Niederlage für Wormser Baseballnachwuchs

Den Anfang machten am Samstag die Teeballer der TGW Baseballabteilung. In Mannheim erreichte man einen deutlichen 36:26 Sieg.
Trainer Elschner war mit seinen Schützlingen vollaufzufrieden, alle 15 Kinder konnten eingesetzt werden. Die Mannschaft zeigte ihr großes Potential in der Offensive, es gelangen eine Vielzahl guter Schläge (Hits). Aber auch die Defensive stand hervorragend und ließ die Mannheimer nie richtig ins Spiel kommen.
Am Sonntag empfing die Jugendmannschaft der Cannibals die Neustadt Saints auf der Bürgerweide. Auch im dritten Saisonspiel blieb das Team ohne Sieg. Die Saints gewannen deutlich mit 19:4.
Die Wormser zeigten sich mit verbessertem Laufspiel und mehreren guten Treffern, brachen allerdings im dritten Inning ein und mussten gleich 12 Punkte hinnehmen.
Für Worms spielten Elschner, Heiser, T. Burg, J. Burg, Klein, Friesenhahn, Wingerter, Vasiliadis und Stenner.

TGW-Cannibals beat BK-Cobras 16-13

Four pitches into the game the Cannibals knew that it was going to be a rough game with the Cobras from Bad Kreuznach. The Cobras' first batter, Jeff Smith, connected for a towering home run to deep left field and at the Cannibals found themselves behind 2-1 at the end of the inning.
After this initial shock, both the Worms pitcher, Naum Adam, and the defense settled down for the next two innings, holding the Cobras scoreless. In the bottom of the third, a triple by Ed Seaman and a single from Jerry Labrie brought in three runs, giving the Cannibals a 4-2 lead.
The Cobras answered in the fourth with 3 runs, retaking the lead. They were able to increase their lead to 10-5 in the sixth inning with good hitting, strong pitching and solid defense. The Cannibals also made too many errors in this phase of the game and were happy to not be even further behind.
The seventh inning would be the decisive inning in the game. Pitcher Adam and the Cannibals defense regained their old form and put the Cobras down 1-2-3. The TG Worms offence exploded, sending 13 batters to the plate. Hits by Greg Hilker, Don Schönborn, Sven Friederich, Dennis Biedert and Ed Seaman brought home seven runs, giving the Cannibals a 12-10 lead.
Bad Kreuznach was able to muster another run in the top of the eighth, but the Cannibals continued where they had left off in the seventh. Singles by Adam and Jerry Labrie and a double by Biedert brought home four more runs giving the Cannibals an insurmountable 16-11 lead going into the ninth inning. Two singles and a double produced two more runs for the Cobras, but this was too little too late.
Playing for the Cannibals were: Thomas Holschuh, Naum Adam, Sven Friederich, Dennis Biedert, Ed Seaman, Jerry Labrie, Greg Hilker-Schmele, Mike Zielauf, Don Schönborn, Hans Karpf, and John Borja.

Knappe Niederlage für Wormser Jugend-Baseballer

Gegen die Vertretung aus Trier mussten die jungen Wormser Baseballer auf der heimischen Bürgerweide eine knappe 10:12 Niederlage hinnehmen.
Gleich in der Anfangsphase wurden reihenweise gute Gelegenheiten zu Punkten leichtfertig vergeben. Dies sollte sich später rächen. Nach zwei Innings stand es noch 3:2 für die Nibelungenstädter, dann kamen die Gäste immer besser ins Spiel und führten zwischenzeitlich mit 3:9. Die Cannibals machten es vor den zahlreich erschienenen Eltern noch einmal spannend aber die zum Schluss eingeleitete Aufholjagd kam leider zu spät.
Besonders in der Offensive zeigten sich deutliche Schwächen. Wie schon im Spiel zuvor gelang nur eineinziger Treffer, diesmal durch Marco Bastuk. Auch alle drei eingesetzten Pitcher waren insgesamt nicht konstant genug. Trotz einiger guter Ansätze wurden einfach zu viele Walks abgegeben.
Solide agierte dafür die Feldverteidigung, die nahezu alle sich bietenden Möglichkeiten zu einem Aus wurden auch verwandelt. Im vierten Inning gelang Nick Friesenhahn ein sensationeller Fang.
Trainer Elschner der viel Talent in seiner jungen Truppe sieht, hofft auf einen Sieg im nächsten Spiel, das am nächsten Sonntag um 10.30 Uhr auf der Bürgerweide gegen die Neustadt Saints stattfindet...

Worms beats Rockland 32:26 in 11 Innings

In einem sehr spannenden Landesliga-Baseballspiel haben die Worms Cannibals in ihrem Saisonsauftaktspiel am Sonntag in Neuwied die Rockland Raptors mit 32:26 geschalgen.
Zuerst gingen die Wormser nach drei Innings (Durchgänge) mit 11:0 in Führung und es sah so aus, als ob die Cannibals leichte Beute hätten. Doch Rockland wachte auf und übernahm nach der 5. Inning die Führung mit 13:12.
Am Anfang des 9. und normalerweise letzten Innings stand das Spiel 24:21 für Rockland. Als Gast waren die Wormser als Erster daran zu schlagen und sie mussten mindestens dreimal punkten was ihnen auch gelang. Durch gute Schläge von Naum Adam, John Borja, Thomas Holschuh und Ed Seaman konnten die Cannibals den Spielstand ausgleichen. Jetzt waren die Raptors an der Reihe aber die Wormser Verteidigung stand fest und somit ging es unentschieden in die Verlängerung.
Ein Baseballspiel darf nicht unentschieden ausgehen und es werden weitere Innings gespielt bis eine der Mannschaften nach dem Inning den Vorsprung errungen hat. Im 10. Inning konnten die Cannibals zwar zwei Punkte machen aber durch einen Fehler in der Verteidigung und 2 gute Hits konnten die Neuwieder dies ausgleichen.
Endlich im 11. Inning haben die Wormser den Vorsprung auf 6 Runs (Punkte) aufgebaut und anschliessend die Raptors auf 0 Runs gehalten. Somit war nach 5-3/4 Stunden Spielzeit (!) die Partie für Worms entschieden.
Bei den Cannibals haben noch mitgespielt: Jerry Labrie, Dennis Biedert, Bernd Beyer, Greg Hilker-Schmele und Mike Zielauf.

Jugendligaspiel Baseball, in Mainz am 2.04.05

Zum Saisonauftakt musste die Jugendmannschaft der TGW Baseballabteilung auswärts in Mainz antreten. Gegen den Meister der letzten Jahre gab es nicht viel zu holen, die jungen Wormser verloren 18:3.
Gleich im ersten Inning gingen die Mainzer deutlich mit 7:1 in Führung. Gegen den starken Mainzer Pitcher hatten fast alle Wormser Schlagmänner Probleme überhaupt den Ball zu treffen. Nur den beiden Auswahlspieler Tobias Burg und Paul Elschner gelang ein Schlag ins Feld.
Auch in der Defensive wurden viele einfache Fehler gemacht, eines der wenigen Highlights war ein seltenes Doubleplay durch Marcel Gumbinger.
Diesen Sonntag geht es um 11:00 auf der Bürgerweide gegen die Vertretung aus Trier.

Baseball Jugendhallenturnier in Saarlouis am 6.03.2005
Beim Abschlussturnier der Baseballhallenrunde konnte die Jugendmannschaft der TGW "Cannibals" den vierten Platz belegen.
Im ersten Spiel gegen den Vorrundenersten und spätern Turniersieger Saarlouis-1 setzte es eine deutliche 0:7 Niederlage. Da man beim letzten Turnier gegen denselben Gegner erst in der Verlängerung unterlegen war, hatte sich die Mannschaft um Trainer Sacha Elschner diesmal mehr ausgerechnet. Aber sowohl in der Offensive, wie auch in der Verteidigung lief nicht viel zusammen. Einzig Pitcher Christian Klein, der in allen drei Spielen zu überzeugen wusste, verhinderte eine noch höhere Niederlage.
Aufgrund des Spielplans musste man noch gleich zweimal gegen die zweite Garnitur aus Saarlouis antreten. Mit 13:1 und 9:2 konnten beide Partien gewonnen werden.
Besonders auszeichnen konnte sich Jan Heiser mit einigenstarken Treffern und der erst neunjährige Robin Goodwill, der ein mehr als gelungenes Debüt feiern konnte.
